Rosetta Stone Totale: video provided by Rosetta Stone
BACKGROUND:
ECHO volunteers are aware that the lack of English skills is a major problem for many in the area we serve. ECHO management considered trying to conduct ESL classes at ECHO, but there is no available space. There are other problems involved with running an ESL class at ECHO.
In 2010, ECHO decided to run a pilot program based upon an internet version of Rosetta Stone, a very popular software program that is used by the State Department and the DoD. The internet version is accessed by students in their own homes at any hour of the day or night. There are no classes held at ECHO.
It is important that the ESL student attend a regular ESL class in addition to using Rosetta Stone. The encouragement of fellow students and the real life practice of English skills cannot be replaced by a computer. We view Rosetta Stone as a supplement, not a substitute, to a regular ESL class.
ELIGIBLE STUDENTS:
Our primary recruitment is derived from referrals from ESL teachers in our area. We ask that students be serious about learning English. Here is the list of qualifications:
- The student must be enrolled in an ESL class
- The student is referred to ECHO by the ESL teacher
- The student must have a computer at home and be connected to the internet.
- The student must know the basics of using a web browser and must be able to use email.
- The student must spend at least 5 hours per week using Rosetta Stone.
- ECHO/Rosetta Stone project management may place other restrictions on eligibility.
Having a computer on the internet and enough basic skills to visit a web site is a significant hurdle for many potential students. We are encouraged by the general rise in computer literacy.

In addition to a computer on the internet, the student will need a headset with a microphone.
Each student is provided with a username and password and URL (internet address) of the website.
This link will take you to a Rosetta Stone demonstration.
The great majority of language learners don't get enough practice in speaking. Rosetta Stone contains a speech component which can correct pronunciations and give the student more confidence to speak out in the regular ESL class environment.
If you know of potential students, please ask that they email me at kidron@cox.net
A basic ability to use email is an important positive indicator that the potential student has the requite computer skills.
If possible, we will have someone call and speak with the potential student in the student's native language.
